We determine the purposes and means of processing. Where we use third-party service providers (such as hosting or analytics), they act as Data Processors on our instructions and in accordance with applicable data protection agreements.

Collection and Use of Your Data

Legal Basis for Processing

Under the GDPR, we process personal data only where we have a valid legal basis. We rely on:

  • Necessity for the performance of the Service: Processing that is strictly necessary to provide the Service (e.g. language preference cookie, technical logs).
  • Legitimate interests: Processing for analytics and improvement of the Service, where our interests are balanced against your rights and we use privacy-preserving settings where possible.
  • Legal obligation: Where we are required to retain or disclose data to comply with applicable law or court order.

Types of Data Collected

Personal Data

We do not collect names, email addresses, or other contact details. To the extent that technical data (such as IP address or device identifiers) collected via the Service qualifies as personal data under the GDPR, we process it only as described in this policy and in accordance with the stated legal bases.

Usage Data

Usage data is collected automatically when you use the Service.

This may include your device's IP address (which may be personal data), browser type and version, pages visited, date and time of access, time spent on pages, and similar technical or diagnostic data.

When you access the Service from a mobile device, we may collect device type, unique identifiers, operating system, and browser type. We and our processors aim to minimise and, where possible, anonymise such data.

Purposes of Processing

We use the data we collect for the following purposes:

  • Provision and operation of the Service: To deliver the calculator and related content, including storing your language preference and ensuring technical functionality.
  • Management of your preferences: To remember your language choice (e.g. via the NEXT_LOCALE cookie) and to present content in your selected language.
  • Service improvement and analytics: To analyse how the Service is used, to improve performance and user experience, and to detect and fix technical issues.
  • Security and integrity: To detect, prevent, and respond to technical failures and security threats, in accordance with our legitimate interests and legal obligations.

Technical Details

Language preference (cookie)

We set a cookie (e.g. NEXT_LOCALE) to store your language preference (one of: nl, fr, de, en). This is strictly necessary for the Service to function in your chosen language. The cookie remains on your device until you delete it or change the preference. No other persistent identifiers are stored for this purpose.

Vercel Analytics

We use Vercel Analytics as a Data Processor to collect usage data in a privacy-preserving manner. We do not collect names or contact details. Data collected may include:

  • Page views and navigation paths
  • Device type and browser information
  • Approximate geographical location (country level only)
  • Performance metrics (e.g. load times, error rates)

External data (Statbel)

The Service retrieves publicly available statistical data from Statbel (https://bestat.statbel.fgov.be) to perform calculations. This data is not personal data and is used only to provide accurate, up-to-date results.

In-session state

We use client-side state (e.g. via Zustand) to manage application state during your visit. This data exists only in your browser memory for the duration of your session and is not sent to our servers or stored after you leave.

Copy-to-clipboard format

When you use the copy buttons (e.g. on the calculator result or the rates tables), we store your chosen format preferences in your browser’s local storage: the decimal separator (comma or dot) and how the euro symbol or code is shown (e.g. € before or after the amount). These preferences are used only to format the text that is copied to your clipboard and are not sent to our servers. You can change or clear them at any time in the settings dialog or by clearing your browser’s local storage.

Your Choices Regarding Cookies and Tracking

You can control cookies and similar technologies in the following ways:

  • Delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time.
  • Use your browser's private or incognito mode to avoid persistent storage of preferences.
  • Configure your browser to warn you when sites set cookies or to block third-party cookies.

Disabling or blocking cookies may prevent the Service from remembering your language preference and may affect how the site works for you.

Data Retention

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes set out in this policy or as required by law. Cookie-based preferences are stored until you clear them or change the setting. Analytics and technical data are retained in accordance with our processors' policies and our need for security and improvement; we do not retain such data longer than necessary. You may contact us to request information about specific retention periods.

International Transfers of Data

Your data may be processed by service providers (such as hosting or analytics providers) located in countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA), including the United States. Where we transfer personal data to such countries, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place as required by the GDPR.

Such safeguards may include transfers to countries that the European Commission has deemed to provide an adequate level of data protection, or the use of standard contractual clauses (SCCs) or other approved mechanisms. You may request further information about the safeguards we use for specific transfers by contacting us.

By using the Service, you acknowledge that your data may be transferred and processed as described above, subject to the safeguards referred to in this section.

Disclosure of Your Data

When We May Disclose Your Data

We may disclose your data where we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to:

  • Comply with a legal obligation, court order, or request from a competent authority
  • Protect or enforce our or others' legal rights or property
  • Prevent or investigate misuse of the Service or unlawful activity
  • Protect the safety of users of the Service or the public
  • Protect against legal liability or defend against claims
Security of Your Data

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include secure transmission (e.g. HTTPS), reliance on reputable service providers with contractual security obligations, and limiting access to data to what is necessary. No method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security but we act in line with common industry practice.

Your Rights Under the GDPR

If you are in the European Economic Area (or a jurisdiction that provides equivalent rights), you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

  • Right of access

You may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you and information about how we process it.

  • Right to rectification

You may request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal data.

  • Right to erasure

You may request deletion of your personal data in certain circumstances (e.g. where it is no longer necessary or you withdraw consent where consent was the basis).

  • Right to restriction

You may request that we restrict processing in certain situations (e.g. while we verify accuracy or where you object to processing).

  • Right to data portability

Where processing is based on consent or contract and is carried out by automated means, you may request to receive your data in a structured, commonly used format, where technically feasible.

  • Right to object

You may object to processing based on legitimate interests. We will cease processing unless we demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests, or for the establishment, exercise, or defence of legal claims.

  • Right to lodge a complaint

You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the EU Member State of your residence, place of work, or place of the alleged infringement. In Belgium, the supervisory authority is the Data Protection Authority (Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit / Autorité de protection des données).

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the Service, or applicable law. We will post the updated policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date.

Where changes materially affect how we use your personal data, we will endeavour to bring them to your attention (e.g. by a notice on the Service) before they take effect.
